A Midwest automotive manufacturer came to AMS seeking an upgrade to the equipment they use to produce an air intake manifold they supply to a major automotive OEM. Some of the upgrades included: leak-testing five outlets to a pressure of 30psi with a maximum leak rate of 10cc/min. and the addition of nine ‘poka-yoke’ features… all while minimizing production cost, reducing the floor space required, and cutting the cycle time for the production process.AMS engineered a custom solution by implementing a Zaxis leak tester with several special additions. The new production process begins with a part being loaded into a custom 3-D nest in the Zaxis, then a variety of photoelectric and laser sensors are employed for precision, and operator safety is ensured by a Keyence light curtain and Omron PLC. Ultimately, each part is being produced and tested successfully with a total cycle time under 30 seconds. Floor space was kept to a minimum, and production costs were reduced to the manufacturer’s satisfaction.
